]]> UTSA, UT Health San Antonio and Bexar County children’s advocacy center ChildSafe were jointly awarded a $5,000 grant from the Institute for Integration of Medicine and Science (IIMS). The grant will fund research related to child abuse in Bexar County.

This grant is well timed, as April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Principal investigator Monica Lawson, UTSA assistant professor of psychology, hopes the study will provide a better understanding of San Antonio’s high rate of confirmed child maltreatment cases.

“This project represents a first step towards solving this problem,” Lawson said. “The bigger picture is once we understand why rates are so high, we can design and implement targeted interventions to prevent abuse and neglect in our community.”

]]> Over the course of the last year, our experience tells us an astoundingly high number of children have been physically and sexually abused. But we have not seen them or heard their voices. My colleagues in the world of social services and I are aware that COVID-19 unleashed economic turmoil and disconnection from support systems in families across the country. Such conditions can stimulate violence in families where it did not exist before and worsen where it was already present. Factor in that on average it takes a child 2 1/2 years to disclose their abuse, and the impacts from the pandemic on our children will be severe and long-lasting.

What continues to worry those of us who advocate for children is the limited in-person connections we have had with children since March 2020. We know thousands of children have been confined in households with intensified issues of domestic violence, parental mental health, alcohol and substance abuse, all factors for increased risks to children.

  • What is your role at your organization and what does it entail?

    • As President and CEO of ChildSafe, it is my responsibility and privilege to lead and guide board and staff members to ensure every child who walks through our doors is treated with dignity and respect and receives the most advanced care possible during what is likely the most traumatic time of their lives. Our new Harvey E. Najim Children & Family Center is a model for other nonprofits to understand how informed design can inspire healing. The beautiful campus is a trauma-informed setting that says to all who enter—clients, partners, staff members, and the community at large—”you are welcome, you are safe, and you are special.” The new campus is a sanctuary for children, their families, and the professionals who care for and protect them, dramatically impacting a child’s ability to heal.

    • Describe your organization’s mission in your own words.

    To provide care and services directly to children and adolescents traumatized by sexual abuse, severe physical abuse, neglect, or exploitation and heal from the abuse they have suffered at the hands of an adult. As the only Children’s Advocacy in Bexar County, we coordinate efforts of child protection staff, law enforcement professionals, family advocates, medical experts, and mental health clinicians for children and adolescents traumatized by abuse.
